Valentine’s Day at Project Linus
15 Feb
On Valentine’s Day I tagged along with Sheila to a Project Linus meeting. Here’s a little blurb about what they do from their website:
Project Linus is a non-profit organization with a two-fold mission.
- First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”
- Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
What that translates into is a bunch of people, mostly grandmas, who make free quilts for sick kids in the hospital. Pretty cool. I’ve never seen so many quilts in my life—and this is just the Los Angeles chapter.

So I didn’t do much that day but I did sew on a tag to Sheila’s first quilt. I learned how to do a blanket stitch. Below is the final product. Awesome!

The woman who runs this chapter has a daughter who couldn’t make it that day so she sent a barber shop quartette to sing for her mother. Check out the video.

The workshop was held in a church. As I explored the place I found a library of free Jesus videos topped off with a full rack of romance novels. There’s something funny about mixing dime store literature with christian themed docudramas.
