Road to Singapore
Not Rated 1940 • Runtime: 85 Minutes • Comedy, Musical, Romance
Two carefree friends and shipmates, Josh Mallon (Bing Crosby) and Ace Lannigan (Bob Hope), swear off romantic entanglements…until trouble finds them. After scandal disrupts Josh’s engagement and causes chaos aboard their ship, they escape to avoid their problems, hopping from Hawaii onward to a mythical island called Kaigoon near Bali. There they rescue Mima (Dorothy Lamour), a beautiful dancer, from her abusive partner Caesar (Anthony Quinn); she moves in with them and quickly takes charge of their lives. Both Josh and Ace fall for her, leading to comic conflict. When Josh’s wealthy father and fiancée arrive to retrieve him, Mima must choose—initially siding with Ace, she later sees Josh is truly loved. As tensions peak, Ace is falsely accused of being there illegally and is arrested. He escapes, and both he and Mima flee—only for Ace to realize Mima’s heart truly belongs with Josh, leading to a bittersweet farewell.

| Notes | The 1940 film Road to Singapore was released on VHS in the early 1990s, bringing the first installment of the iconic "Road to..." comedy series to home audiences. These tapes typically featured colorful artwork highlighting stars Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour, sometimes bundled with other films in the series like Road to Morocco. Not Rated and formatted in NTSC, the VHS editions are now collector’s items, especially when found sealed. They reflect the era when classic Hollywood cinema was revived for home viewing during the height of the VHS boom. |
